The program was started with grant money from BoatU.S. Foundation for Boating Safety. This program was so successful that in 2002 the BoatUS Foundation started a national program based on the Lake Gaston Water Safety Councils original idea.

In 2000 the WSC was awarded a grant from BoatUS to install thirteen signs on Lake Gaston that summarize North Carolina and Virginia boating laws.

In 2003 the National Safe Boating Council granted the WSC $1,000.00 to buy additional PFDs for the Kids Loaner program.

In 2005 the WSC created a mobile educational trailer to the Lake Gaston Community. Promoted as a one-of-kind on the East Coast, this latest educational effort from the WSC will provide valuable information on water safety. The trailer will be available to groups and organizations.

WSC Ready to Display Educational Trailer

By Maurice Emery

GASBURG, VA – It was with great pride that Don Beazley, President of the Lake Gaston Water Safety Council (WSC) told the gathering last Wednesday that the completion of the new educational trailer is moving right along. Completion is probably the wrong word, because the trailer will be updated continually. Beazley told the members, “The trailer is colorful, eye catching and attractive to grab your eye.”

“This could easily be one of a kind on the East Coast,” Beazley added. He went on to talk about the all of the noteworthy educational features of the trailer. Interactive displays, movies and mini training features that will be part of the WSC continuing efforts to make boating safer on Lake Gaston.

The latest educational effort for the WSC will cost more than the $10,000.00 originally expected, but it is pay as they receive it policy. Fortunately, many organizations and governments around the Lake have been very helpful in providing the funds. Virginia Beach has even agreed to help with funding. They have committed to $1,000.00 for this year and $3,000.00 for next year. Friends of Flotilla 93 has committed to $3,000.00. These are just two of the many commitments that have been made.

The WSC will be ready to display the state of the art trailer on May 21st at Eaton Ferry Marina and May 22nd at Washburn’s Marina.

In other business at the monthly meeting in Gasburg, it was announced that BoatUS is sponsoring a Life Jacket Design contest. Entries are being encouraged from armchair inventors to high school science clubs and collegiate design programs. The winning designer will receive a $5,000 award.

Entries will be accepted from March 31, 2005 to December 15, 2005, with the winner announced at the Miami International Boat Show in February 2006. You can find complete details on the BoatUS web site at: http://www.boatus.com/foundation/
