Election nearing for Littleton, other towns

Voters in Littleton and the rest of Halifax County can take advantage of something new in this fall’s municipal elections ---– same-day registration and voting.

Jackie Taylor, the director of the Halifax County Board of Elections, said this is the first time the county has had the same day registration and voting in place.

Election day is Nov. 6, and anyone who registered by the Oct. 12 deadline can vote in town elections that day. Anyone who has lived within the Littleton town limits for at least 30 days but has not yet registered to vote can take advantage of the same-day registration and voting, but only until 1 p.m. on Nov. 3. At that time the early voting ends, and anyone else who wants to vote must wait until election day. Anyone not already registered will not be able to vote.

Taylor said to take advantage of the same-day registration and voting, one needs to have proper identification, and must visit the county election office in Halifax to do so.

On election day, polls will open at 6:30 a.m. and remain open until 7:30 p.m. for elections in Littleton, Macon, Warrenton, and other municipalities in Warren and Halifax counties.

In Littleton, where 432 people are registered to vote, there are five candidates for three town board of commissioner seats.

Incumbents Terry Newsom, Claire Debnam, and Alfred Cooke are joined on the ballet by political newcomers Mark Murphy and Patrick MacRae.

There are two voting precincts in Littleton. Precinct 1 is at the town hall, and precinct 2 is at the fire station.

In Macon, where there are 68 registered voters, folks going to the polls will be faced with a curious choice -– not enough candidates to fill all the board seats.

There are five open seats there, but the only candidates are J.W. Beddingfield, David Harris, Glenn R. Riggan, and Wanda Thompson.

Debbie Formyduval, director of the Warren County Board of Elections, said that means someone in Macon may very well wake up on Nov. 7 to learn they’ve unexpectedly been voted on to the town board of commissioners via write-in ballot.

Macon also has two candidates vying for the mayor’s post. They are Rob Evans and Lawrence Skinner.

Voters can cast their ballots in Macon at the old Macon school, which is also being used as the town hall at present.

In Warrenton, where 786 voters are registered, six candidates are vying for four seats. They are John Blalock, Charles P. Haywood, Palmer Wood King Jr., John Mooring, Travis A. Ormsby Sr., and Audrey H. Tippett.

Warrenton also has two precincts, one at the new fire station and one at the senior center.

Voters in both Macon and Warrenton must vote on election day, since Warren County does not have a same-day registration and voting program.
