County fair winners are named |

By Peggy R. Shearin A week of wonderful weather greeted fairgoers and exhibitors alike as the 2007 Warren County Fair began its run on Sept. 27. In addition to rides for fair goers, there was plenty in the way of exhibits and friendly competition between those displaying their work. The exhibit hall was open on Sunday afternoon and Monday for participants to prepare and set up their exhibit booth, horticultural and family and consumer science entries. All judging was held on Tuesday morning and the winners are listed below: Educational booth competition first place winners, receiving $100 and a blue ribbon rosette, included the Warren New Tech High School, Early Childhood Education II, Mariam Boyd School, Warren County Health Department, Troop 190, Loaves & Fishes, and Master Gardeners. Second place winners received $50 and a red ribbon rosette and they included the Warren County Future Farmers of America, Warren County Farm Bureau, Cub Scout Pack 672, Emanuel Episcopal Church, Warren County Coordinating Council for Senior Citizens, Third place winners received a white ribbon rosette and $25. Those organizations included the American Cancer Society, A green honorable mention ribbon and $20 prizes went to Alternative Family Services, Parktown 4-H Club and Tots ‘N’ Teens. The horticultural exhibits consisted of field crops such as barley, corn, cotton, hay, oats, and small grain and are paid premiums of blue, $4 and red, $3. Tobacco premiums are blue, $10, and red, $8. Horticultural entrants, such as apple, grapes, nuts, onions, pears, sweet potatoes, Irish potatoes, tomatoes, turnips, lima beans, okra, beets and others are paid blue, $3, and red, $2. H Horticultural winners included W. P. Jones, Robert Mattox, Caleb Wilson, Dolly Nicholson, Mary Dunson and Mary Alston. The Family And Consumer Science Department consists of arts and crafts and needlework. These premiums pay blue, $3.50 to $4, and red, $2.25-$2.75. Pantry and cake decorating, along with canning items pay premiums as follows: blue, $3 and red, $2. Preserves, jelly, jams, pickles and relishes paid as follows: blue-$3.50 to $4, and Red, $2.25-$2.75. Winners in the family and consumer science department include: Betty Miller, Nell Hicks, Lula Mae Hall, Elvelyn Hall, Betty Silver, Annie Hicks, Katie Silver, Richard Dailey, Elsie Sumrell, Geraldine Kilian, Dolly Nicholson, Kristen Hicks, Louise Collins, Jack Collins, Janet Martin, Linda Kidd, Lucinda Baker, Ashley Martin, Mary Alston, Mary Ross, Tommy Ross and Aubrey Looney. The Warren County Fair ended its 2007 season at midnight on Saturday, Sept. 29. The Warrenton Lions’ Club sponsors the fair annually through Warren County Fair Association. Board officers for the 2007 Fair Association are, president, David Proctor, vice president, Tommy Ross, secretary, Susan Lynch, and treasurer, Jerry Abbott. Fair Association directors for 2007 include Kenny Clayton, Macon Robertson, W. Monroe Gardner, David Proctor, Eddy Serls Jr., Jerry Abbott, Kent Copley, Charles Duncan Jr., Roy Pat Robertson, Bill Robertson, Susan Lynch, Tommy Ross, Ann Alston, Vonnete Robertson and Lee Cheese. |
