The Lake Gaston Weed Control Council (LGWCC) has a full agenda for tonight’s meeting in Gasburg, Va.
The item on the agenda that most Lake property owners are concerned about, the naming of the 2007 treatment contractor, will be discussed but the final decision may be put off to allow the contract committee to work out the final details.
Three treatment contractors have submitted bids for this year’s treatment: They are Aquatic Nuisance Plant Control, Foster Lake & Pond Management and Professional Lake Management.
In an effort to streamline the process in the future, the council is scheduled to receive a report on the pros and cons of a five year contract agreement. According to Dr. Elton Brown, president of the LGWCC, if they had a five year contract agreement they would still have had to re-bid the contract this year due to the changes in the contract.
Another item on tonight’s agenda is aimed at providing oversight.
Steve Hoyle and Rob Richardson, both of whom are with the Crop Science Department of North Carolina State University, plan to make a presentation on providing the needed oversight and community outreach to help keep treatment on track, limit any treatment problems and keep the public informed.
The council also plans to discuss using the services of Remetrix, an Aquatic Ecosystem and Vegetation Mapping and Monitoring company, to provide them with a GPS survey and maps for following the treatment of weeds on the lake. One of the reported plusses for using the Remetrix services is that they can provide access to data on the World Wide Web through a secure GIS interface.
Other agenda items include: a report on proposed Code of Ethics for members of the council; an update on a proposed public outreach newsletter from the councils Public Affairs Committee; and a report on the search for an Executive Director.
The meeting will start at 6 p.m. at the Kennon House in Gasburg. There will be a dutch treat dinner. Generally the meeting is conducted while dinner is being prepared and then continues after dinner.
