| A Roanoke Rapids man was arrested and charged in Littleton with attempted murder after a Roanoke Rapids officer was seriously wounded when he was bashed in the head with a 4X4 during an altercation Friday night. Christopher Thomas Davis, 22, was charged with attempted murder, assault on a law enforcement officer inflicting serious injury, and resisting arrest, according to Roanoke Rapids Police Department Capt. J.K. Hinton. The captain said the incident occurred on June 28 when Officer Westrey Thorpe tried to serve an arrest warrant on Davis, charging him with domestic violence related to an earlier incident. "Mr. Davis tried to flee," Hinton said. "He ran and hid, stating he didn’t want to go to jail." He said Officer Thorpe used pepper spray in an attempt to subdue the suspect, and that’s when Davis allegedly grabbed a 4x4 post and smashed Thorpe in the head. Hinton said Thorpe received serious injuries in the attack, but was able to call for back up as Davis fled. Thorpe was taken to Halifax Regional Medical Center, then transferred to the University of North Carolina Medical center where he was treated for head and facial injuries. Hinton said he was not sure of the extent of the injuries, but that they did include a broken jaw. Thorpe was released from UNC hospital Saturday, but will be going back for additional treatment, Hinton said. The attack occurred around lunch time Friday, and Davis was on the run until Saturday morning when Halifax County Sheriff’s Office deputies spotted, and then apprehended, him in Littleton. Hinton said Davis remains jailed under a $250,000 bond. |
