| Littleton will have five candidates seeking three seats on the town board of commissions, according to the Halifax County Board of Elections. Friday, July 20, was the deadline to file for a run at the office, and all three incumbents – Terry Newsom, Claire Debnam and Alfred Cooke, had filed to seek re-election. Joining them on the ballet will be Patrick MacRae and Mark Murphy, both seeking elected office for the first time. MacRae and Cooke officially announced their intentions in articles published in the July 18 edition of the Littleton Observer, while Murphy’s announcement is in this week’s edition. Newsom and Debnam have not formally announced. While Littleton will enjoy a contested election, not all area towns will. In fact, there are at least two area towns that don’t have enough candidates to fill the open seats. Macon, just up N.C. 158 in Warren County, did not have a single candidate file to run for the lone vacant seat on the five-member town board of commissioners. That prompted the Warren County Board of Commissioners to extend the filing deadline to noon today (July 25). The town of Halifax has the mayor’s seat, as well as five commissioners’ seats open, yet only four have filed to run for the open seat, in addition to one candidate running for mayor. The Halifax County Board of Elections also extended their deadline to file until noon today. |
