Local man tapped for HCC board of trustees

Jay Alan Baker of Littleton has been selected to serve on the Halifax Community College Board of Trustees. A governor’s appointee, Baker’s term began Feb. 12 and will run to June 30, 2010.

Baker is an alumnus of Halifax Community College, having earned an associate degree in applied science with a marketing concentration in 1983. A United States Army veteran, Baker is also a graduate of the Management Development Program, Young Executives Institute of the University of North Carolina.

“As a graduate of HCC and business owner for over 17 years, I recognize and appreciate what an important role HCC can play in educating and preparing students for the future. I look forward to serving on the Board of Trustees,” Baker said.

The president of Baker Laundries, Inc./Waterworks Car Wash Inc., he worked with Blue Flame Fuels Inc., as general manager from 1981-1990.

He has served in a number of capacities with different organizations, including serving as chairman of the Weldon Board of Adjustment since 2005; chairman of the Halifax County Solid Waste Advisory Board since 2004; director of the Lake Gaston Association beginning earlier this year; and he was a member of the North Carolina National Federation of Independent Business Leadership Council from 2002 to 2006.

He also served as a board member and officer of Roanoke Valley Chamber of Commerce from 2001-2003 and is a 2001 graduate of the Leadership Roanoke Valley.

Baker was honored in 2003 with the North Carolina Governor’s Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service and in 2001 with the Roanoke Valley Chamber of Commerce Volunteer of the Year award. In 1994, he was named the Roanoke Valley Chamber of Commerce Successful Young Entrepreneur of the Year.

Dr. Stanley Edwards, chairman of the college Board of Trustees said, “Jay Baker has demonstrated leadership qualities throughout his professional career. We are delighted to have him join the Board of Trustees.”

“Jay will bring a different perspective to the College’s board. I look forward to working with him to better our school and our community,” said college President Dr. Ervin V. Griffin Sr.

Baker is married with two daughters.

He replaces Verlon Barry Wilson.
