Littleton soon to hop on the cyber highway

By Maurice Emery Editor Emeritus

Littleton may soon have a web page endorsed by the town board.  At this month’s town board meeting Monday night Sylvia Alston asked the town commissioners to endorse the web site. The site will be developed and maintained by Alston and Diana Parham at no cost to the town.

According to Alston the site will include information on restaurants, town services, retail businesses, listing of churches in the area and a community calendar.  They also plan to include information on Lakeland Cultural Arts Center, fire department information, blood drives, and Littleton-Lake Gaston festival information.

Alston envisions the site as a one stop place to go for information about the town for residents and newcomers.  Town meeting minutes, commissioner information and their areas of responsibility and budget information will be part of the site..

Commissioner Terry Newsom asked if there was already a site for the town. The developer of the previous site was Karen MacRae.  She was at the meeting and told the board that she had tried unsuccessfully to maintain a site, similar in nature to what Alston is suggesting.  MacRae advised the board that she had zero response from the local businesses, groups and churches in supporting the site. In the end she was forced to take the site offline last year.

MacRae did extend an invitation for Alston to review what she had done, but stressed that her business owned the site and the information. Alston said she would take her up on the offer.

When the conversation turned to domain names it was revealed that the town owns a domain name. In fact the town owns four domain names. The one that is the most promising to use is townoflittleton-nc.com.

According to Alston, she and Prham have extensive experience in web site development and maintenance.  They do plan to incorporate anything that the town clerk has developed and would love to hear the ideas of other citizens in the town as to what should be included as long as they can keep the website small enough not to incur cost to the Town of Littleton or its taxpayers.

When Alston asked the board, “Does that man that it’s a go,” she was told yes as long as the town approved whatever went on the site. There was no indication as to when the site will be launched or what the final domain name will be. The www.littletonobserver.com Website will keep you abreast of the progress and we will also provide a link to the town site from our site.
