McIver Elementary School Guidance Councilor James Hunter helped give the students a look into the future last week with a Career Day. The Career Day enables students to be exposed to numerous organizations and companies at an early age, according to Hunter.

Organizations and businesses from the Roanoke Valley spent time talking to students in small groups and providing information and counseling students on the skills needed to be successful in today’s society.

The mission of Career Day was to make sure the children understand that education provides the training ground for successful employment, Hunter stressed.  He added that after school everyone must work and education and family values provide the necessary building blocks for a successful career.

These values were stressed by volunteers from: Halifax Regional Medical Center; law enforcement officers (sheriff’s office and staff from Caledonia prison); educational programs (county library & upward bound college program) and Lowes.

Speakers told the students they should set personal goals and to achieve the highest level of education possible which is necessary in today’s business world.

A show and tell was provided that captured the students’ attention.
